Shipyard Competent Person Course

NFPA Certified Marine Chemist, Kayla Aird, provides Shipyard Competent Person courses compliant with OSHA 29CFR 1915 and NAVSEA Standard Item 009-07. Shipyard Competent Persons play an important role in the shipyard. If designated, the SCP must have the skills and knowledge required by OSHA 29 CFR 1915.7

This course covers the regulations behind the SCP, their roles and responsibilities, the scientific principles behind gas detection, hands-on gas detector training, confined space entry, fire and occupational safety hazards, and more.  This course adheres to the training requirements outlined within NAVSEA 009-07.   

The 24-hour Initial Course Overview

Day 1

  • Federal Regulation overview covering OSHA, NAVY, NFPA 306, and USCG.  
  • SCP’s role in the shipyard.  
  • Performing the duties of the SCP including documentation best practices. 
  • Introduction to the Marine Chemist role, and understanding the Marine Chemist Certificate 
  • Terminology and resources 
  • Review 

Day 2

  • Confined Space Entry  
  • Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety in the Shipyard  
    1. Hazard descriptions, recognition, control, and elimination 
    2. Exposure limits and calculations 
    3. Ventilation principles 
    4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Fire safety and fire watch 
  • Practical exercises and review

  • Different types of gas detectors and other equipment a SCP will use.  
  • Gas Detector Equipment overview and principles 
    1. Sensors and their limitations 
    2. Testing techniques 
    3. Calibrations and bump testing 
    4. Different gas detector settings 
  • Practical exercise with gas detector 
  • Course overview and examination

The 8 Hour Refresher Course Overview

This course is designed to provide SCP’s a review of all the topics discussed in the 24-hr course and to test their knowledge. Each SCP must demonstrate they have the knowledge required by 29 CFR 1915.7 and the ability to carry out the functions and responsibilities of a SCP. 

NOTE: There is no minimum person requirement for these classes.
